February Prolife Events

40 Long Years – But So Many Positive Things Happening

We recently had the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Since that time there has been a staggering loss of life that is difficult to comprehend. While it’s hard to dwell on this reality, there have been a lot of pro-lifers doing beautiful things to remember this and take us in the right direction.

My husband, kids, and I were able to make it to the Diocesan Annual Respect Life Mass and the first annual Midwest March for Life at the Capitol last week. Both were well attended, and I heard that our March for Life made the front page of the Des Moines register and they said almost 500 people were there (although that’s nothing compared to the 500,000+ people at the March for Life in Washington DC)!  My 2-year-old is already learning about all the things that we get to do to “protect babies.”

So be encouraged, get involved, and save the dates for the incredible pro-life events which are coming up!

Inspiration of the Day

In this short video, a young boy dedicates a song to his younger sister who has Down’s Syndrome about how she is the most beautiful!

Des Moines Events Coming Soon!
Rally for Life – February 18th

The Rally for Life will be held Monday, February 18th at the Capitol. There will be a short legislative workshop at 1 p.m. in Room 102 at the Capitol (the old Supreme Court consultation room). Then everyone will have an opportunity to lobby his or her legislators. At 3 p.m. the keynote speaker in the rotunda will be Dan McConchie from Americans United for Life.

The focus will be “40 Years After Roe v. Wade” and the public policy aspects of the issue. The rally is sponsored by many prolife groups including the Iowa Catholic Conference.

Diocesan Pro-Life Workshop – Tentative March 16th

In March there will be the 2nd annual Diocesan Pro-Life day. Plans are still tentative for date and time, but at the Respect Life Mass there was a sign that said to save the date of March 16th. I believe it will be hosted at Christ the King parish again, like last year. This is a great opportunity to work together on learning about and strengthening local pro-life initiatives.

InnerVisions HealthCare Fundraiser Dinner – June 4th

As of today, InnerVisions HealthCare has helped save 85 unborn babies! Please save the date and consider going to their annual fundraising banquet on Tuesday, June 4th, from 7:00-9:00 pm at the West Des Moines Sheraton.  The theme for this year is “Life is Beautiful!”  The guest speaker is post-abortive actress, Shari Rigby, from the hit pro-life movie October Baby.

Space is limited, so pre-register now. Register here.

Invite your friends!  This is the opportunity to share the ministry you care about with the people you love.  Register as a Table Host if you’d like and fill your own FREE table with 10 guests.  The banquet is free for everyone (but I imagine there will be an opportunity to make a free will donation).

Help us make this event a success and invite people you feel are passionate about this life-saving ministry and would be interested in learning more about what we do. Can’t wait to see you there!

Breaking News! Another local Planned Parenthood branch has stopped webcam abortions!

Late last week, Iowa Right to Life learned that webcam abortions are no longer happening in Ankeny, Iowa. That Planned Parenthood clinic has not closed their doors yet, but they have drastically slashed their hours.

The location has been an on-going 40 Days for Life vigil site, as well as receiving year-round prayer support from countless individuals, many of which are a part of the DMACC Students for Life group.

Pope Benedict Tweets in Support of the March for Life

The national March for Life took place Friday and Pope Benedict XVI released a message on Twitter: “I join all those marching for life from afar, and pray that political leaders will protect the unborn and promote a culture of life.” The pope’s Twitter account is @pontifex.

Priests for Life

New Pro-Life Short Film & Prayer

Priests for Life in conjunction with Jason Jones at “Movie to Movement” is proud to promote a new 12-minute professionally produced film called Crescendo.  This artistic film will change the way people think and feel about abortion and will help raise $1 million in support of Crisis Pregnancy Centers.  To learn how you can help go to PriestsForLife.org/Crescendo.

Priests for Life is offering a new prayer in English and Spanish that gives those suffering from physical illness an opportunity to pray in a very special way for the unborn. A Prayer of Offering by the Sick for the Unborn can be found at Priestsforlife.org/offering.

Blessings,
Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director

Iowa Catholic Conference

The president recently signed a “fiscal cliff” deal that passed at the last minute. One positive, pro-life related item that was part of the deal was that it made permanent a tax credit for adoptive parents.

Iowa Legislature Update

Pro-Life

Some main issues ICC will be working on during the session are ending webcam abortions and on stopping funding of abortions and abortion providers in Medicaid.

Sen. Bill Anderson (R-Sioux City) introduced two pro-life bills last week:  Senate File 13, which would prohibit gender-selection abortions, and Senate File 14, related to protocols for medical abortions.

Sen. Brad Zaun (R-Urbandale) filed several bills of interest this week, including Senate File 29, which would prohibit taxpayer funds from being used to subsidize abortion coverage related to the Affordable Care Act. A group of Republican senators, including Zaun, also introduced Senate File 45, which would prohibit abortions after
20 weeks of pregnancy.

Unfortunately, all these bills will have a tough road to advance in the Democratic-controlled Senate. This will not stop us from looking for ways to accomplish positive change on the issue through the legislature.

Death Penalty

The sad murders of two young girls in northeast Iowa have brought back a discussion of the reinstatement of the death penalty in Iowa. The death penalty was abolished in 1965. Currently the state already imposes a life sentence without the possibility of parole for murderers.

The Catholic bishops in the United States have been calling for an end to the use of the death penalty for more than 25 years. We believe the sentence of life without the possibility of parole is a just and sufficient means of protecting citizens while also respecting human life.

To stay informed you can “Like” the Iowa Catholic Conference Facebook page and follow their Twitter account.

Pro-Life & Religious Liberty Postcard Campaign

The US Bishops have asked us to partake in a postcard campaign to help protect Life and Liberty.  The target kick-off day for this event is the weekend of February 9-10, 2013.  Ken Bresnan is our diocesan contact. He is asking that you contact your pastor to get your parish to participate. Then e-mail him at kbresnan@dmdiocese.org to let him know how many postcards you would need.

The postcard signing event gives parishioners, as individuals and as a community, an opportunity to give a timely and effective public witness to respect for life and religious freedom.

You can view the postcards here.
