Iowans for Life Banquet – July 27th

Join us for the Iowans for Life Banquet on Saturday, July 27, at 6:00 pm at Holiday Inn Airport, 6111 Fleur Drive, Des Moines.  The dinner will be $25/person.

The guest speaker will be Bobby Schindler (brother of Terri Schiavo). Bobby Schindler is the Co-Executive Director of the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network which works to protect the lives of the medically vulnerable and disabled from the threat of euthanasia.

Following the tragic death of his sister, Terri, via imposed dehydration and starvation, Bobby gave us his teaching job at Tampa Catholic High School and became a full-time pro-life and disability rights advocate. Today Bobby assists families in need of legal action to prevent their loved ones from health care rationing and food and water removal. Bobby and the Schindler family continue to advocate for persons with disabilities and he works tirelessly to put an end to the growing pro-death mentality that is plaguing our nation.

Next Diocesan Respect Life Meeting – September 3rd

The next diocesan Respect Life meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 3rd at 6 pm at St. Pius X Parish in Urbandale.

Pro-Life Event at ISU – September 5th

On Thursday, September 5 at 8:00pm in the Great Hall of the ISU Memorial Union, the ISU Students for Life group is hosting Catelynn and Tyler from MTV “16 and Pregnant” and “Teen Mom.”

They were originally clients for adoption through Bethany Christian Services, and once they went onto MTV, they became famous.  They will be speaking about adoption, and
why they chose it for their daughter, as well as the process. This event is FREE and open to the public!  Please come and bring friends and family!

The ISU Students for Life will be having pro-life organizations present with tables available to set up information for students and all guests. If you are interested in having a table for your group or organization, please contact David Cordaro at

They are also looking for donors! If anyone is able to make a donation to help with the costs, you can also contact David Cordaro at

*As a former student at Iowa State who was part of the ISU Students for Life, I invite you to find a way to be part of this.  College campuses are such a battle ground to get accurate information out to students.  This event will be great for getting students there who may need to hear about how adoption can be an option for themselves or friends.  It’s especially great that it is free, because that is how you get students there. Please consider taking part in this!

Opening of Christ the King Parish’s Holy Innocent Garden – Tentative October

Christ the King Parish will soon have an area to pray and reflect on babies lost to abortion or miscarriage. There will be a statue of Mary holding baby Jesus and a bench for reflection.

Screening of Pro-Life Movie “Crescendo” – October 20th

On Sunday afternoon, October 20th (time TBA), Holy Trinity Parish in conjunction with Iowans for Life, will screen the 15 minute movie entitled “Crescendo.”  The movie is a true story about a mother from a previous century who was pressured to abort her now famous child.

A panel discussion will follow and light refreshments will be served. One goal of the afternoon is to provide an educational opportunity for those not certain about their stance on abortion.

Pro-Life Dinner Theater Fundraiser – December 14th

On Saturday, December 14th, Holy Trinity will host an event designed to create pro-life awareness and raise funds for both Iowans for Life and Iowa Right to Life. Entitled, “Three Divas and a Guy,” it will consist of a Broadway Review and a Dinner Theater (the chef will be
Fr. Michael Amadeo).

It will be a family friendly event beginning at 6 PM (after the 4:30 Mass). St. Nicholas will be the special guest. Children 10 and under are FREE; children over 10 are $5.00, and adults

InnerVisions Updates

Wanted:  Development Director to help advance the nonprofit’s mission by securing the financial resources necessary to sustain and expand the organization’s ongoing mission to empower and educate.  Candidate must be an experienced fundraiser, be well connected to the Greater Des Moines Christian community and have a passion for the sanctity of life from conception to natural death.  Contact Jenny to learn more at 515-440-2273 or

Purity Retreat:  The InnerVisions purity retreat for junior high girls was a huge success!  They are considering putting on another retreat for this coming Fall. The Fall retreat would NOT be an overnight retreat, but a one day Saturday retreat instead. To let them know your daughter would be interested in being there, please contact or 515-440-2273.

Practical help needed:  Her name is Ali and she has a 2-year-old son and is 8 weeks pregnant. This woman has come so far, from being extremely abortion minded to choosing life, but she will need help.

Ali is a high school graduate and 21 years old.  She has worked since she was 16 years old, most recently in security for Citigroup but now finds herself pregnant and jobless. She is very computer literate, proficient in Microsoft Office, and happy doing date entry. She is looking for a receptionist or office support position, however, she would entertain any options.

InnerVisions is helping her in many areas, but the bottom line is she needs a full-time job.  If you have any ideas, please call Jenny Condon at 515-440-2273.

Iowa Catholic Conference Update
House Passes ‘Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act’

The U.S. House recently passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act by a vote of 228-196. The bill would prohibit abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The Obama Administration has indicated he would veto the bill if it passes both chambers and its prospects are uncertain in the Senate. We’ll keep you posted as national action alerts are issued.

Proposed Rule Would Eliminate ‘Webcam’ Abortions

The Iowa Board of Medicine has voted 8-2 to approve a “Notice of Intended Action” to establish a standard of practice for physicians who perform chemical/medical abortions. The proposed rule would require a physician to be physically present while abortion drugs are being provided. In other words, chemical abortions initiated over a videoconference fail to meet a minimum standard of care. The rule would not interfere with other practices of telemedicine.

A public hearing on the proposal is set to take place August 28th.

Final ‘HHS Mandate’ Rule Released

The federal Health and Human Services Department on June 28 released the final rule on the “HHS Mandate.”

The mandate requires almost all health insurance plans to cover female sterilization and all FDA-approved contraceptives – including drugs and devices that can prevent implantation, and at least one drug (Ella) that can cause abortion after implantation. The Church objects to providing these services to its employees because it violates our moral and religious convictions. In my view the mandate prohibits the free exercise of religion as promised by the First Amendment.

The final ruling does not appear to have changed significantly, so we must continue to defend religious liberty.

ICC encourages you to contact your legislators in support of legislation that would address the problem: H.R. 940 and S. 1204, the Health Care Conscience Rights Act. Go to for an action alert.

Texas Senate Passes Bill to Ban Late-Term Abortions

Even with all of the craziness, Texas was able to pass a bill that bans abortions after 20 weeks gestational age. The bill should also hold abortion clinics accountable for meeting basic health and safety standards as surgical centers, requires a doctor providing abortions to secure admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, and lastly, requires a doctor to personally administer the abortion-inducing drugs to the patient.  It should dramatically improve the safety and health considerations for women in those situations.

US Bishops’ Officials Author Booklet for Blessing of Unborn Children

The new booklet, “The Gift of Joy,” has a beautiful blessing for unborn children, and it can be used in parishes. Let your parish priest know about it!

Information about the blessing is available online HERE.

  • Order your Choose Life License plates!
  • Participate in the bi-annual 40 Days for Life prayer vigils outside of Iowa abortion clinics.

  • Join the event planning team:  Help plan and facilitate activities through the year such as our upcoming Midwest March for Life on Saturday, January 18, 2014.
  • Volunteer at an Iowa Right to Life booth at various venues around Iowa:  state fair, county fairs, church events, rallies, conventions, parades, etc.
  • Actively participate in our growing social media presence – currently on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Volunteer to help with the bi-annual book sale (can volunteer year-round).

  • Baby Shoe Displays – Much like our baby crosses, these shoes serve as a silent reminder to the more than 180 babies who lose their lives every hour.

Thanks for all the ways you are supporting life!  Please e-mail the Iowa Right to Life office to get involved.  E-mail: 515-244-1012 or 877-595-9406.  Website:
