Iowa Catholic Conference – Local and National Update

Iowa Legislature

According to the Iowa Catholic Conference:

“Several bills we support have been introduced this past week, including:

·  House File 58, calling for an ultrasound to be performed before an abortion

·  Senate File 55, which would restrict funds in the Affordable Care Act from being used to pay for abortions or pay for health insurance that contains abortion coverage”

A bill that should not be supported also came up:

“House File 65 was introduced last week in the Iowa House to legalize doctor-prescribed suicide (physician assisted suicide) for people who are diagnosed as being terminally ill. From the perspective of our religious faith, the Catholic Church supports the protection of human life from conception until a natural death. We believe vulnerable and sick people need assistance, not suicide.”

National Legislature

Also, according to the Iowa Catholic Conference, recently the U.S. House of Representatives “approved the ‘No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion’ Act, which would codify a permanent, government-wide policy against taxpayer subsidies for abortion and abortion coverage. It also requires health plans offered under the Affordable Care Act to disclose the extent of their coverage for abortion and the amount of any surcharge for that coverage to consumers. The bill moves to the Senate for consideration.”

Gabriel Project Update

Gabriel Project Des Moines is in search of a new volunteer director. Gabriel Project is a pro-life organization that matches women in crisis pregnancy situations with “angel” volunteers who will help meet their practical needs with the organization’s resources.

Marilyn Sharp, an amazing woman, will continue to be the volunteer director until September 1, 2015, and then will transition to be an “angel” helper. The Board of Gabriel Project would like to identify someone to be the director soon so that person could be trained and ready before September. The Gabriel Project asks you to prayerfully consider this rewarding service to women in difficult situations and their babies. If you are interested or would like more information, e-mail Marilyn Sharp at dsharpie@mchsi.com.
