Local Events

Skate for Life – March 1st

The Dowling Students for Life group is hosting the annual Skate for Life on, Sunday, March 1st from 6-8 pm at Brenton Skating Plaza downtown (520 Robert D. Ray Drive, Des Moines). Cost is $8 per person for ages 12 & up or $30 for a family of four or more. Skate rentals are included in the cost. The money received will go to support local pro-life pregnancy crisis centers. I hope you can make it!

The Drop Box Film – March 3rd – 5th

There is a new pro-life movie that will be in theaters for only three days. It looks really good, and I have read articles about it from Catholic Digest and from Focus on the Family. The movie is a true story about the value of life, following “South Korean pastor Lee Jong-rak and his heroic efforts to embrace and protect the most vulnerable members of society” (

Pastor Lee set up a drop box in his house where mothers could leave babies for him to care for who would otherwise be abandoned on the streets of Seoul. This is a story of the value of life and how one person can see a problem and make a difference.

See the documentary trailer HERE.

In Des Moines the film will be showing at the Jordan Creek Theaters (101 Jordan Creek Pkwy, West Des Moines) on Tuesday, March 3rd – Thursday, March 5th. It will only be available on those days, so try to make it if you can.

Next Diocesan Pro-Life Meeting – March 3rd

You are welcome to attend the next diocesan pro-life meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd, at 6 pm at St. Pius X Church in Urbandale. Come to be encouraged and to learn more about positive and creative pro-life initiatives in the Des Moines area.

40 Days for Life – Until March 29th

Mark your calendar for the Spring 40 Days for Life campaign which will take place from February 18th to March 29th. Bring together family, friends, and church members to be a peaceful and prayerful witness in front of abortion facilities and be there in case anyone needs help or hope. Iowa Catholic Conference Update

From the Iowa Catholic Conference:

Action Alert on Ultrasound Bill

“HF 58 would require that prior to performing an abortion, a physician must certify that the woman has undergone an ultrasound imaging of the baby and that the woman was given the opportunity to view the ultrasound image. We believe this bill could be part of a truly informed consent process for women and reduce the number of abortions.”

Take one-minute to support this bill and send a prepared e-mail to your state legislator HERE. Click on “Support Ultrasound Bill.”

Iowa Supreme Court & the Webcam Abortion Case

“The Iowa Supreme Court has set a date of March 11 to hear arguments on a lawsuit against the state Board of Medicine’s rule essentially prohibiting “webcam” abortion.  In 2013 the board approved a rule that would require a physician to be physically present when abortion drugs are being provided, rather than pushing a button following a remote video consultation. A district court upheld the rule, but Planned Parenthood has appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court.”

Please pray for the Iowa Supreme Court to uphold the judge’s decision to ban webcam abortions.

Iowans for LIFE: Iowa Legislation to Support

I haven’t seen any action alerts with prepared e-mails on this topic, but Iowans for LIFE reports that there are new bills in the Iowa legislature that would provide employees a leave of absence from work due to adoption. “Most employers provide leave of absence in the case of child birth, but do not afford employees the same protection when adopting children.” If you have a chance, contact your legislators to support these bills: HF 116 and SF 225.

NCHLA Action Alert

From the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment:

The Health Care Conscience Rights Act (H.R. 940) has been re-introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. Members should be urged to support and co-sponsor H.R. 940. Please click on the link below to contact your Representative today!

Inspirational Video of the Month – Special Needs Prom

On February 13th, the Tim Tebow Foundation sponsored its first annual “Night to Shine” events – proms for people with special needs. They supported 44 events in three countries and over 7,000 guests attended.

Guests were treated royally – having their make up done, receiving crowns, the red carpet, dancing, and a few lucky events received a surprise visit from Tim Tebow himself.

Here is a 3-minute video that shows a little about a “Night to Shine.” I highly recommend it. See it HERE.
