Legislative Update
Iowa Catholic Conference – Fetal Tissue Bill Stalls & Then is Passed  By Iowa House

According to the Iowa Catholic Conference, HF 2329, is a “bill to prohibit the trafficking and use of fetal tissue following an abortion.” It was going to be debated recently, but “the state Board of Regents came out publicly against the bill. We can infer this is because the University of Iowa wants to protect its ability to continue using fetal tissue from abortions in research.”

“The Church teaches that the use of this tissue is unethical because it is obtained as a result of an abortion. We do not support the abuse of one group (the unborn) for the benefit of others.”

After the stall, the Iowa House did pass HF 2329 before the second funnel deadline. “The House did adopt an amendment to allow current fetal cell lines derived from abortions to be used for research. The purpose was to allow the University of Iowa to continue current research on cells derived from an aborted fetus.”

Unfortunately, “the bill was passed too late for the (Iowa) Senate to take any action before the legislative deadline.” We will see if the bill can make progress in the Senate soon.

Iowa Right to Life Update
– According to Iowa Right to Life, Iowa is second in the nation for the number of abortion clinics closed (we are 2nd to Texas). “Thirteen Planned Parenthood clinics have closed for good since 2012.”

– Recently, the Doctor Prescribed Suicide bill died in the Iowa Senate. Yay!

– Maine has just started to do webcam abortions. “Overnight, they went from three abortion clinics to 20.”

– Iowa Right to Life and SBA List praised US Senator Chuck Grassley (from Iowa) for strongly supporting waiting to vote on the Supreme Court vacancy until the American people have chosen a new president. This allows the American people to have a say in the future of the Supreme Court.

Senator Grassley is being attacked for his position. Please send him a prepared message of encouragement to stay strong. Send the message HERE.

Global Abortion Tax for United Nations
According to C-Fam, the United Nations is considering a “global tax on financial transactions that will be an independent revenue stream for UN programs that promote abortion and ‘various forms of the family’.”

This tax, the Tobin Tax, has been discussed before. “It would tax all international financial transactions including when you change money when you travel.” This would allow the UN guaranteed money to support legalizing abortion around the world.

Please sign this petition against the global tax HERE.

Prayers Needed!
– Continue to pray for the result of the Supreme Court case that includes the Little Sisters of the Poor and Priests for Life. The case is on whether the government can force Christian organizations to violate their religious principles and provide artificial contraception, including abortion-inducing drugs, as expected by the HHS mandate.

http://www.sba-list.org
– Pray for wisdom for the Supreme Court justices as they rule on the court case Whole Women’s Health vs. Hellerstedt. This is the most significant pro-life case in many years.

The case is about if abortion facilities should have to meet more regulated health standards like other outpatient surgical centers. This seems like common sense for women’s safety, but there is a lot of money and power at stake. Setting these regulations would close many current abortion clinics because they are not prepared to meet these health standards.

– Pray for the presidential election coming up! Soon presidential nominees will be chosen, and, as always, a lot hangs in the balance.

Priests for Life Election Novena Prayer

O God, we acknowledge you today as Lord,
Not only of individuals, but of nations and governments.

We thank you for the privilege
Of being able to organize ourselves politically
And of knowing that political loyalty
Does not have to mean disloyalty to you.

We thank you for your law,
Which our Founding Fathers acknowledged
And recognized as higher than any human law.

We thank you for the opportunity that this election year puts before us,
To exercise our solemn duty not only to vote,
But to influence countless others to vote,
And to vote correctly.

Lord, we pray that your people may be awakened.
Let them realize that while politics is not their salvation,
Their response to you requires that they be politically active.

Awaken your people to know that they are
not called to be a sect fleeing the world
But rather a community of faith renewing the world.

Awaken them that the same hands lifted up to you in prayer
Are the hands that pull the lever in the voting booth;
That the same eyes that read your Word
Are the eyes that read the names on the ballot,
And that they do not cease to be Christians
When they enter the voting booth.

Awaken your people to a commitment to justice
To the sanctity of marriage and the family,
To the dignity of each individual human life,
And to the truth that human rights begin when human lives begin,
And not one moment later.

Lord, we rejoice today
That we are citizens of your kingdom.

May that make us all the more committed
To being faithful citizens on earth.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

– Please pray for some of the California crisis pregnancy clinics who are refusing to comply with the new law, which would force them to tell women about abortion as an option for them. For more information, see the article HERE.

Pro-Life Pope Francis
“The fight against abortion is part of the battle in favor of life from the moment of conception until a dignified, natural end. This includes the care of the mother during pregnancy, the existence of laws to protect the mother postpartum, and the need to ensure that children receive enough food, as well as providing healthcare throughout the whole length of life…

…On science being aware it is human life: ‘A pregnant woman isn’t carrying a toothbrush in her belly or a tumor…We are in the presence of a human being’.”

– Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio (before he became Pope Francis) in book of

interviews “Pope Francis: His Life in His Own Words”
