October-Respect Life Month

Please join us for Life Chain, Sunday, October 1, 2-3:30 PM-Merle Hay and University

Annual Life Chain Please join St. Theresa parishioners Sunday, October 1, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm along Merle Hay Road in the peaceful and prayerful prolife witness that the Church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception to natural death. We quietly stand to remember the more than 59 million lives lost to abortion, and we pray for our nation and for people in crisis situations. Life Chain will happen rain or shine. Hope to see you there! If you have any questions, please email Rachel at

Life Chain 2017 Follow-Up:

Life Chain was incredibly successful this year. Everything went smoothly with St Theresa being the sign pick up/drop off location again—we had over 230 people attend! We welcomed people from Walnut Creek Church, who bolstered our numbers so that we filled Merle Hay in front of St Theresa and stretched over to University along St Theresa west parking lot. We are particularly thankful to see so many young people and families participate. A group of young women sang beautiful hymns through much of the time that made this a very uplifting setting for all.

St Theresa Pro Life committee members brought cookies to feed this large number after Life Chain was over. The larger the number of people, the more impact Life Chain has. We pray that God had the right people drive by at the right time for encouragement, and we know that everyone’s presence and prayers were effective 🙂

Singing angels kept our spirits high!

We also heard from Charlotte Pettit, who attended Life Chain. She shared with us that a group of Pro Life people meet every Saturday morning in front of Planned Parenthood, 1000 E Army Post Road, at 10am. They pray all four mysterious of the rosary. Also the 1st Saturday of the month is when the students in high school come to do their commitment. All are encouraged to come and pray for Pro Life intentions.

Iowa Rules 72-hour Waiting Period Legal

Iowa received a big win today with the ruling of Judge Farrell stating the 72-hour waiting period is legal. Earlier this year Planned Parenthood and the ACLU challenged a 72-hour waiting period which passed into law along with the 20-week abortion ban and a requirement to offer women a visual of her ultrasound. Planned Parenthood was able to postpone the 72-hour waiting period from going into effect by calling the law unconstitutional. They stated it caused an “undue burden” on the mother and was not medically necessary.
Polk County Judge, however, has ruled the law constitutional. The Des Moines Register reported today Iowa Judge Jeffrey Farrell refused to block the law. “The undue burden standard has been criticized, but it fairly balances the two competing interests of a woman’s right to choose an abortion versus the public’s interest in potential life,” he wrote. “The evidence at trial focused on the hardships women face when dealing with an unwanted pregnancy, but the public’s interest in potential life is an interest that cannot be denied under the law. Both of these interests are important.”
The 20-week abortion ban which states an abortion cannot be performed on a child after 20-weeks, also includes a requirement for women to have two doctor visits before getting an abortion, an option for the mother to view her ultrasound and the 72-hour waiting period. There is an exception to this law if the mother’s life is at risk.
This law takes not only the mother into consideration, but also the life of the child who must also be considered.

Spiritual Adoption Program

MONTH 1 “My heart is beating!”

Your spiritually adopted baby has been quite active over the past month. Already your baby is 10,000 times bigger than at conception. Your baby has developed the foundations of his brain, spinal cord, and nervous system by the 20th day. His heart began to beat on the 21st day, pumping blood through its own circulatory system and the blood type can be different from his mother’s. Your baby is most vulnerable during the next month of being aborted. Pray that the Lord of Life might move the heart of his mother to give him the most precious gift of all – – the gift of life

We are waiting for a Polk County District Court’s decision in a lawsuit against the three-day waiting period in Iowa’s new 20-week abortion ban. The court case was brought by Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. The prohibition on abortion after 20 weeks remains in place while the waiting period before an abortion has been held up by the Iowa Supreme Court.

We know babies love looking at the faces of their mom or dad. Researchers discovered that this preference develops in the womb several weeks before birth, according to a study published Thursday. By projecting light through the uterine wall of pregnant mothers, British scientists found that 34-week-old fetuses would turn their heads to look at face-like images.
“ We have shown the fetus can distinguish between different shapes, preferring to track facelike over non-face-like shapes,” said psychologist Vincent Reid of Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, a co-author of the study. “This preference has been recognized in babies for many decades, but until now, exploring fetal vision has not been attempted.”

The findings, which appeared in the journal Current Biology, were the first to show it’s possible to explore sight and cognition in babies before birth.

Researchers projected two patterns of three dots in the shape of a triangle through the uterine wall of 39 pregnant mothers: One was in the shape of eyes and a mouth and the other was upside down.

Scientists then measured how the fetus responded using highquality, 4-D ultrasound. The ultrasound showed developing babies turned their heads to look more often at upright, face-like stimuli than those presented to them upside down.

“It turned out that they responded in a way that was very similar to infants,” Reid said. Although fetuses’ eyes are likely to be closed most of the time, the ultrasound scans often showed them blinking.

A 4-D ultrasound of a fetus tracks a stimulus during research into fetal cognition. The ultrasound scans often show the fetuses blinking.

Below is the editorial written by IFL Director Maggie DeWitte.  This was published in the Des Moines Register on Sunday June 4, 2017.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland announced that they will be closing four clinics. The clinics set to close by June 30, 2017 are Sioux City, Keokuk, and Burlington. The Bettendorf center will provide limited telemed abortion services after June 30, but will also eventually close. They also have clinics in Urbandale, Ames, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Council Bluffs, Cedar Falls and two in Des Moines, all of which remain open for now.

Planned Parenthood stated that the reason for the closures was due to legislation passed last session that stopped family planning funds from going to clinics that provide abortion. Governor Branstad signed this bill a few weeks ago.

The Des Moines Register Editorial board believes this is a bad thing for Iowans. (Anti-Abortion agenda limits birth control, May 28).  Their angst is misguided.

The reality is that women will NOT lose health care because of these closures.

They WILL continue to get access to quality, comprehensive health care across the state of Iowa.

In fact, the Coalition of Pro-Life leaders developed a detailed map to help educate Iowans on the number and availability of community health centers throughout Iowa. It states, “There are only a handful of mostly urban clinics in Iowa that offer abortions. Shifting family planning dollars to community health centers instead will give more women more health care options in more areas of the state, particularly in rural communities.”

As support, the coalition surveyed 157 rural community health clinics to find out if they offer the same services as Planned Parenthood, including: STD testing, Cervical Cancer Testing, Breast Cancer Testing (Mammograms), and Contraception. The only PP service excluded from the survey was human abortion, which has nothing to do with women’s reproductive healthcare.

We discovered that these rural clinics provided most, if not all, of the above services, and usually on-site (in contrast to PP who typically refer services like mammograms to other locations). And women in need of these services can get them close to home without having to drive across the state to distant urban clinics.

The truth is in the numbers. One-hundred fifty-seven rural Iowa health clinics will benefit with this infusion of new funding. (A detailed map can be located at:

Planned Parenthood’s motto is: Care. No Matter What.

Really? They claim that only a very small percent of the services they offer are abortion. If this was the case and if Planned Parenthood truly cared about women and families in Iowa, they would cease human abortion procedures so they could continue to be eligible for the family medical waiver planning dollars.

But they won’t. Abortion is big business. Whether it is selling baby body parts or deceiving women to dismember their baby in the womb, it’s all about the bottom dollar.

In contrast to the Register’s dour warning, the family medical wavier IS good news for families in the state of Iowa. We worked hard this last session to educate legislators and the public that there are many quality community health centers in Iowa that provide comprehensive healthcare to women and families across the state. They do so without taking the life of precious human beings. This is a victory for our state, and Iowans for LIFE is committed to continue working to see all abortion clinics closed in Iowa.

Iowa Catholic Conference News updates

The Catholic bishops of Iowa have released a statement reviewing the 2017 Iowa legislative session.

ICC staff was pleased to be present when Gov. Branstad signed Senate File 471 on May 5. The bill prohibits abortion after 20 weeks post-fertilization with exceptions to save the life of the mother or for a serious physical health emergency. The ICC has been working on similar legislation since 2011 and it is the first limitation on abortion passed in Iowa for many years. You can check out a photo of the bill-signing on our website. The ACLU and Planned Parenthood received a court order blocking the waiting period while a trial court will decide the matter. The 20-week ban itself is in place.

During the past session, the ICC fought efforts to restore the death penalty in Iowa. We are continuing our long time collaboration with the Iowans Against the Death Penalty group.

We also encourage you to read and sign the
National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty.

As we commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima, we share this prophecy from Sister Lucia dos Santos, one of the seers who lived much longer after the other two.  Sr Lucia once wrote a letter to Cardinal Carlo Caffarra in which she spoke about a final battle between God and Satan:  “The final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family. Don’t be afraid, because anyone who operates for the sanctity of marriage and the family will always be contended and opposed in every way, because this is the decisive issue. However, Our Lady has already crushed its head.”

Those fighting for life, marriage, and the family must remember that on May 13, 2017 — the 100th anniversary of Our Lady appearing in Fatima — the ultimate fight is about saving souls from hell. This means saving those enslaved to sexual sins and those who profit from sexual sins: the abortionist, the pornographer, the pimp, the prostitute. Our Lady of Fatima invited the children to help save souls through prayer and sacrifice.
Our Lady’s message about the reality of hell and the children’s example of what to do to help people from going there is something anyone fighting for life and family must take seriously. The prayer taught to the children should be constantly on our lips: “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have the most need of your mercy.”
